What prevents people from finding the right doctor the first time? Mainly not taking responsibility for their own healthResearch Your Doctor and it shows up in the following – failed research leads, intimidation, lack of knowledge – there is so much info it can be confusing to the public and difficult to muddle through it all.

Criteria for any surgeon should include:

  • Licensure – Minimum requirement  which is administered by the state and is a matter of public record
  • Certification
  • Accreditation

Board Certification is a key because it assures the doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school, has a minimum 5 years residency or  surgical training in an accredited training program and has 2 years devoted entirely to plastic surgery. Following this a doctor must pass both comprehensive written and oral examinations.

Remember it’s not against the law for any doctor to perform a medical procedure. An ENT , dentist or dermatologist can perform procedures just as a Board Certified Surgeon can perform. The only difference is a board certified surgeon has the proper training and certification.

Be careful to not confuse Certifications with listings in directories. For example:

  • American Board of Plastic Surgery – assures that the surgeon has gone to an accredited  medical school and completed 5 years of training as a resident surgeon

  • American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery – is a directory that lists names of surgeons in a geo area and has a website disclaimer that you still have to research the physician you choose.

Both look like certification but only ASPS has a certification process the other is a paid directory.
